- Attorney D.J. Tegeler was appointed by the Illinois State Bar Association to the Sentencing and Corrections Committee. The purpose of this committee is to review legislation involving sentencing and to make recommendations on how to better facilitate all parties involved in the penitentiary system of Illinois. This committee meets four times a year and is tentatively scheduled to view the workings of Tammas Correctional Center and Marion Federal Penitentiary in early 2007.
- On September 13, Mr. Tegeler will testify before the Illinois House Judiciary Committee of the General Assembly for Illinois as to the affects of Public Act 94-166 as applied to juveniles requiring their personal identifiers to become public on sex cases after their seventeenth birthday. Mr. Tegeler was invited to testify by the ranking member of the Republican Party, Representative Patricia Linder. Mr. Tegeler will testify as to his opinion on Public Act 94-166, how to balance the rights of the State of Illinois vs. the rights of the individual in protecting all of society, and the potential affects on a minor child having to register as an adult under the sex offender registration.
- Most recently, Mr. Tegeler was quoted in both the Daily Herald and Northwest Herald concerning a conspiracy to commit murder case and an aggravated arson case.
Court News
- After arguing the Public Act 94-166 as applied to juveniles requiring their personal identifiers to become public on sex cases after their seventeenth birthday was unconstitutional, Mr. Tegeler was successful in receiving a favorable ruling from the Circuit Court of Kane County. The Circuit Court of Kane County granted a temporary restraining order allowing all the identifiers of Mr. Tegeler's minor client to remain private. Additionally, the Circuit Court temporarily restrains the Illinois State Police, the Attorney General's Office, the sheriff's office, and the Kane County States Attorney's Office from publishing any and all of those identifiers. The case will be heard on a permanent injunction.
- In July of 2006, Mr. Tegeler was successful in having his client found not guilty of home invasion and aggravated battery after a week long trial. Mr. Tegeler's client was accused of breaking into a house of a "former family member" and beating up her new boyfriend. After deliberating for approximately three to three and a half hours, the jury found Mr. Tegeler's client not guilty of the above charges.
- In June of 2006, Mr. Tegeler successfully argued a divorce trial before the Circuit Court of Kane County. The issue in relation to this case was the division of assets and Mr. Tegeler was successful in arguing his position and securing a favorable ruling for this client.
- In relation to a 1994 murder case, Mr. Tegeler successfully raised the argument that his client may have received an unfair trial in the Circuit Court of Kane County. Therefore, the Circuit Court of Kane County refused to dismiss his client's post conviction petition and forwarded it to the second stage of the post conviction hearing procedure.
- Mr. Tegeler recently won a DUI/drug trial.
- Upcoming cases for Mr. Tegeler include several felony jury trials in relation to, home invasion, credit card fraud, practicing medicine without a license, conspiracy to commit murder, and arson. Additionally, Mr. Tegeler is preparing two divorce cases which are set to go to hearing in the next couple of months. Lastly, Mr. Tegeler also has on his docket DUI trials and misdemeanor trials which will take half a day to try.
